Phase 4

Phase 4 is different to phase 2 and 3 in that there are no new graphemes to learn.  Instead, this phase concentrates on encouraging children to learn how to read and spell consonants that are next to each other in words, for example, 't' and 'r' in 'trip'.

Some words are not easily 'sounded out' using phonics.  These are called 'tricky words' and children simply have to memorise them.  In phase 4 we learn the following tricky words:
